LookLook: Search Engine for Your Laptop

A private, lightning-fast local search engine designed for your laptop. It searches documents, source code, PDFs, spreadsheets and media on your drives, with answers in under 100 milliseconds.

LookLook-Installer.exe, 60.3 MB, version 1.0.0. Windows 10 and 11.

LookLook's search screen showing six results for the word supplier, with highlighted matches, file type, size and Preview, Open, Folder and Copy Path buttons.

Windows may say "unknown publisher"

The installer is not code-signed. When you open it, Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" and name an unknown publisher. This is expected. To go on, choose "More info", then "Run anyway". If you want to be sure the file is intact, compare its SHA-256 checksum with the one on this page.

What it looks like

These screens were taken on sample files made for this page, not on anyone's real files. The sample folder's path is shortened to "D:\Sample files".

What it does, and what it does not

It does

  • Search the text inside PDFs, Word (.docx), Markdown, code and spreadsheets (.csv, .json, .xlsx), as well as file names.
  • Highlight the matching words, and suggest searches as you type, with your recent searches.
  • Show a preview of a file, open it in its usual Windows program, or show it in Windows Explorer.
  • Offer dark mode and light mode.
  • Let you choose which folders are searched, under "Manage Folders".

It does not

  • Send your files, file names or searches anywhere. It needs no account.
  • Need Python, Node.js, Git or administrator rights.
  • Search Windows system folders, Program Files, AppData, or developer folders such as node_modules and .git.
  • Change or delete your files. It reads them to build its index.
  • Come with a code signature, so Windows shows an "unknown publisher" warning.

Everything stays on your laptop

The search index is a database on your own computer. LookLook sends nothing of yours to Gravita or to anyone else.

One thing comes the other way: the first time it builds an index, LookLook may download its small search model (about 65 MB) from the internet. The model comes down to your laptop; none of your files go up.

On first start, LookLook indexes all fixed drives on your laptop, such as C:\ and D:\. Under "Manage Folders" you can remove a drive or add a folder at any time.

Install and uninstall

Install

  1. Download LookLook-Installer.exe and check its SHA-256 checksum below.
  2. Double-click the file. If Windows warns about an unknown publisher, see the note above.
  3. It sets up the search database, finds your fixed drives, and adds a Desktop shortcut and a Start Menu shortcut with the LookLook icon.
  4. LookLook starts and opens http://localhost:8000 in your default browser. A command window stays open while it runs; closing it stops LookLook.

The file is portable: you can copy it to a USB drive and run it on another Windows laptop.

Uninstall

  1. Open a command prompt in the folder that holds the file and run LookLook-Installer.exe --uninstall
  2. It stops LookLook's background server and removes the Desktop shortcut and the Start Menu folder.
  3. It asks whether to delete the search index database. Answer y to delete it, or N to keep it.
